Session overview

By understanding colonial legacies, TIP practitoners and scholars can be more effective in navigating transformative change.

This session explores the intersection of colonial legacies, urban infrastructure and transdisciplinary collaboration in the pursuit of more just outcomes in sustainability practice and research. We will examine how historical injustices remain entrenched in cities and institutions, shaping day-to-day practices in governance, research, and lived realities at the margins.

The discussion will focus on introducing alternative conceptual frames and languages to challenge these embedded structures. We will then explore and consider how these perspectives can be integrated into practices and processes to achieve more transformative and equitable outcomes in urban planning and sustainability practice and research.

Contributors

The session will share learnings and insights from the following contributors:

  • Jane Wardani is applying and refining a practice framework for transdisciplinary collaboration developed through her PhD, Based on a literature review of recent practices from the interrelated environment, health, and development fields; a unique case study; and theoretical meta-analysis, I propose a practice framework for international transdisciplinary research, focusing on the collaborative process in power-diverse contexts. The session is organised in partnership with AIT – Austrian Institute for Technology.
