A newly released report from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) marks a significant step forward in leveraging Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) to accelerate sustainable development across Africa. This important publication, “Advancing Sustainable Development in Africa : Lessons from challenge-oriented Science, Technology, and Innovation roadmaps,” shares crucial insights from a collaborative project aimed at promoting sustainable practices on the continent.
The report is the culmination of a joint project launched in 2022 by the JRC and the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA). This initiative sought to harness the transformative potential of STI to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Sub-Saharan Africa. Through practical research and evidence-based policy development, the project has demonstrated how targeted STI roadmaps can lead to concrete, impactful measures.
The project involved a selection of several African countries, initially identifying 14 nations that met the criteria for developing STI roadmaps for the SDGs. Ultimately, the report focuses on the detailed experiences of five partner countries: Gambia, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, and Seychelles addressing distinct, pressing challenges through their STI roadmaps:
- In Gambia, the focus is on enhancing food self-sufficiency, aiming to improve agricultural productivity and strengthen food value chains.
- In Mauritius the reduction of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is taken into consideration, emphasizing prevention and treatment innovations.
- In Namibia, on strengthening the resilience of rural communities to climate change, particularly concerning the water-food-energy nexus.
- In Rwanda, the efforts are dedicated to transforming food systems to enhance food security and leverage emerging technologies.
- In Seychelle,s the priority lays in enhancing energy efficiency and promoting the uptake of renewable energy within its investment and industrial sectors.
This tailored approach highlights how STI can be strategically deployed to tackle diverse and specific sustainability issues across the continent.
The report also highlights the crucial role of international cooperation between the EU and Africa in the field of science, technology, and innovation. It provides policymakers and stakeholders with valuable insights and inspiration to effectively pursue the Sustainable Development Goals.
Significantly, the report explicitly cites the contributions of key global initiatives such as the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) and the Transformative Innovation Africa Hub (TIAH). TIPC and TIAH are acknowledged for their work in strengthening innovation systems in Africa and their instrumental role in guiding research and development (R&D) and STI more effectively towards achieving the SDGs. TIPC is recognized for its interdisciplinary research and experimentation with demonstration, while TIAH is highlighted for its support to African countries in STI and policies for the SDGs through research and capacity building.
