TIPC researchers publish new open-access article in Science and Public Policy, exploring the Intersection of Transformative Innovation Policy and Responsible Research and Innovation. The article, Transformative Innovation Policy Meets Responsible Research and Innovation: A Critical Reflection, authored by Paloma Bernal-Hernández, Alejandra Boni, Johan Schot and Diana Velasco, examines how Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP) aligns with and can be strengthened through the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI).
Drawing on a Learning History of TIPC’s first phase, the article reflects on the lived experiences of researchers, policymakers and practitioners engaged in TIPC’s transdisciplinary work. The analysis identifies seven key learnings, highlighting the need to deepen anticipatory capacities, broaden inclusion, and enhance responsiveness to emerging challenges, while recognising reflexivity as a particular strength of TIPC’s approach. Empirical insights are drawn from experiments and learning spaces involving partners such as Vinnova (Sweden), the South African Department of Science and Innovation, EIT Climate-KIC, Nordic STI agencies, and the Colombian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
The authors argue that RRI can benefit from TIPC’s emphasis on sustainability, care, systemic transformation and deep learning, offering a more integrated approach to innovation policy. At the same time, the paper positions RRI as a valuable lens for critically reflecting on the relationships between science, policy and society within TIP practice, contributing to the ongoing development of both agendas.
