In September 2024, a delegation from the University of Sussex , led by Pro-Vice Chancellor for Global and Civic Engagement, Professor Robin Banerjee, visited South Africa to reinforce its commitment to global engagement, transformative impact and sustainable development.
This visit represents a milestone in strengthening the work of the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) and establishing fruitful collaborative partnerships with key institutions in South Africa.
During a visit to the University of Pretoria, the delegation explored further opportunities for collaboration, including building on the existing initiatives of the Transformative Innovation Africa Hub (TIAH). Coordinated by the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex Business School, TIAH aims to maximise its positive influence throughout the continent, strengthening partnerships that can foster innovative change
The University of Johannesburg is also a key partner in Sussex’s South African network. With projects such as the Trilateral Research Chair in Transformative Innovation, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and Sustainable Development, Johannesburg plays a crucial role in advancing international research collaboration and impact. The Trilateral Chair partnership also includes the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) in Kenya. Funded by the South African National Research Foundation, the initiative seeks to harness science, technology and innovation for sustainable development, using the combined expertise of its partners.
Dr. Fulufhelo Nelwamondo, CEO of the South African National Research Foundation, shared his support for the ongoing collaboration between Sussex and universities in South Africa, highlighting the benefits for both parties.
