Richard Hanna

Biography

Richard Hanna is a Research Associate in the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London. He carries out Technology and Policy Assessments using systematic review methods for the UK Energy Research Centre. His research projects at Imperial have examined: (1) timescales from basic research to commercialisation of energy technologies and consumer products; (2) best practices in heat decarbonisation policies internationally; and (3) the extent to which energy scenarios and energy systems models have tried to represent and explore disruptive / discontinuous change in energy systems. Richard is also an affiliate of the Grantham Institute at Imperial College, for whom he has carried out consultancy research on community renewables and regional innovation for the Climate Group. Previously Richard was a Research Fellow at the University of Reading from 2013 to 2015. Contributing to the Dynamics of Energy Mobility And Demand (DEMAND) project, he conducted secondary analyses of time-use data to understand how the structure and social distribution of householder practices shape peak electricity demand. His PhD at the University of Surrey (completed in 2013) considered the influence of microgeneration installer businesses on the rate and technical standards of small-scale renewables uptake in the UK.
